‘Bao’ Director, Domee Shi Working on a Feature-Length Film at Pixar & Named an "Animator to Watch"

Domee Shi was recently named one of Variety Magazine’s top 10 Animators to watch for 2018 — but, they also noted that she may be working on a film.

Variety’s “10 Animators to Watch” list highlights talented people focused on the art form who have already (or will likely) make a splash in the animation industry within the year. In prior years, Adrian Molina (screenwriter & co-director of Cocomade the list in 2016, and Dave Mullins (writer & director of Lou) was included among those honored in 2017.

We were excited to see that Domee Shi was named to this year’s honorees for her impact to the studio, her short film Bao, and because she is currently developing a feature film at Pixar. Wait — really? The brief summary included alongside the concept artwork of Bao noted that “the company’s so-called Brain Trust so loved one of her other original ideas that they’ve invited her to develop it into a feature.”

Domee has certainly made her mark at the studio since her internship in 2011, and we can’t wait for audiences to see Bao alongside Incredibles 2 in theaters on June 15.

UPCOMING FILM SLATE

So, where could Domee’s film slot into the lineup? Well, it may be too early in development to have a date assigned, but review the upcoming slate of Pixar’s films below and see what you think. We know that Dan Scanlon is working on a film that takes you into a suburban fantasy world and that Mark Andrews is working on a project as well, but it is yet to be determined who else is working on a film — or what those films are about.
